Acrobats

I was expecting to see some quick tricks like America’s Got Talent, Not even close! The skill was not even comparable. It was a completely sold out showing which was nice because I was very concerned about when I could clap after the warning not to use cameras or bombs for the safety of the performers (that was the direct translation, oh China!). The beginning was kind of odd with this colored scarf dance. But after a while I really got into it once you see the whole picture and not just focus on one person. They would all kneel down and the jump up in rhythm and throw their scarf thing in the air and all together it was like a rainbow wave that made your eyes dance, very cool. The next act was by far my favorite, these 6 men and 4 little girls came out and the girls climbed up the guys and did a hand stand on the guys hand fully extended in the air. And then they start juggling the girls! Literally throwing them in the air and catching a different girl, all landing in the handstand pose after crazy flips in the air. One of the girls was shaking so bad And maybe I cried! But no one ever fell the whole night. I was sure I was going to watch one of them crack there head open and die. Becausr seriously not mats, not harnesses, just death. There was an act called “gorgeous girls” where they had a jump rope thing and a dumbbell like thing that looked like 2 bowls glued together. And I am thinking ok this will be a 5 sec act what the heck can you do with that. But these chicks were insane! They like pull on the ends of the rope to roll the dumbbell and then like throw it in the air and catch it, then behind there back, then after a flip, then after roll it all the way around their body’s, under the leg. You can’t describe it! I bought the video, so get ready to watch it everyday when I get back! The funniest act was the bicycles. So they did some bmx style standing on the seat, hand stand but not like for a second during a jump like holding the position for multiple laps around the stage with 6 other people in unison. But it gets better, while they are going in circles more girls run out and jump on… then jump from bike to bike and switching with the driver. The finally they kept adding more and more girls on one bike. No exaggeration 15 girls on one bike like 5 girls standing straight up on each other’s shoulders and fanning out 5 on each side. What is so funny about that is on campus everyone has a bike and it’s like a 20 minute walk between some of the buildings and I am always jealous of the bikers. So now all I want to do is ask someone if I can ride on the back of there bike, and if they tell me no, I’m too big I am gonna say I just saw your friend do 15 girls I know it works! Also funny/ awkward were the costumes. The contortionists were wearing this singlet thing but the whole center strip was nude color including and then a little handkerchief skirt covering her front. But she was not in very lady like positions and she looked naked all down her chest and under her handkerchief. Then the bike girls and this yellow and black tights and 2 bull’s eyes on their chest, very distracting, and I don’t know how that could be attractive reminded me of the Austin Powers machine gun girls, weird.

  1. I know, it's so crazy. I saw a really big one in Shanghai the first time I went over and it was awesome! I was sorry to read about your bag falling and such. How are you adjusting?

No room at the inn: Shanghai edition

About a year ago my husband and I decided to take a babymoon to Hangzhou and Shanghai. Yes, babymoon is a real thing where expecting couples take one last vacation together before the baby comes. Genius idea that I wish I could take credit for. I was bummed because I was too pregnant to fly back to the US like I had planned but figured a 3 hour flight to Shanghai was safer than an 18 hour flight the DC! Surprisingly, after 7 years living in China I had still never been to 2 of the major tourist attractions, West Lake or the Shanghai Bund. We decided to spend a few days in each city and take a bus between the two.   West Lake was beautiful but the main attraction of walking around the beautiful scenery in the heat and rain was not a good match for my wobbling state; especially with my pregnant bladder and distance and numerous stairs between each public bathroom. We arrived in Shanghai after what seemed like forever on the bumpy bus and I was so glad to be back in a major city. We

10 Things China made me love about America

These things may not make the thanksgiving list of the average American, but they are definitely on my lips every time I come home for a visit.   The things I comment on missing seem to be strange to my friends and family, who then roll their eyes at yet another story beginning with, "where I live in China..." Nevertheless here are some simple joys my life in China has made me love in my homeland. 1.   Hot sink water Washing your hands in cold water during the winter makes the surprise of warm tap water all the more delightful. This comfort would be seen as a wasteful luxury in China where most homes have only one water heater for the shower and even that is only turned on 10 minutes before you hop in the shower, and then switched off immediately after. 2.   Outside air I have noticed the difference in air quality moving around the US between city and country, but even the big city air seems glorious compared to China. Not to say that all of China has the pollut

Why China?

Everyone always asks me, "What made you what to go to China?" And I always answer that I had a friend that did the same program and she talked me into it. (sorry Boom-Boom). And when else can you take a year off from your life? Its truly a once in a life-time opportunity. But the truth is I needed a change, I felt like I was in a dead end job, spending more than I was making each month, barley speaking to my roommates, and burnt out at church. I spent four years working towards an economics degree because it came easy to me and then 3 years learning that numbers on a computer screen make me crazy! I won't to do something I have a passion for, and I am hoping that teaching will be my passion. My life needs a complex overhaul in order for me to make a change. I got so comfortable in the dual work that I was afraid to go into the unknown. I remember all my dreams in college and my fearlessness, it scares me that my ambition is fading. My life needs adventure and challenges.
